Appointed currently as Professor of Orthopaedics at International Medical University and practicing in Kuala Lumpur and Seremban. He was previously with the Ministry of Health, serving in various orthopaedic specialist posts in Kuala Lumpur , Ipoh and Seremban.

He has fifty peer reviewed publications in spinal surgery, orthopaedic infections, children's fractures, natural history of congenital spinal deformities, orthopaedic engineering and litigation in orthopaedics; and four academic theses and dissertations to date - The efficacy of lateral side arm traction in Supracondylar fracture humerus in children (1995); A new method of sagittal spinal curve measurement (1996); The natural history of Congenital Kyphosis and results of surgical treatment (2001); and The Inquiry-Mediation: A method of alternative dispute resolution (2005).

He has served as Editor of the Orthopaedic Supplement of the Medical Journal of Malaysia, and as Editorial Board Member of the Medical Journal of Malaysia. Currently he is a member of the Ethics Committee of the Malaysian Medical Association and is a member of the First Panel Arbitrators of the Kuala Lumpur Regional Centre for Arbitration.

Dr Harwant was a Fulbright Fellow in 2001 at the University of California at San Diego. He also served as secretary of the Fulbright Alumni in Malaysia . He has also won several medals in Innovation and Invention exhibitions (2001) and several best paper awards at International meetings (Asean Orthopaedic Association 1997); (American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons 2002); (Lasers in Medicine 2003). He has two patents for Surgical navigation devices in the EU and USA.

His current interests are orthopaedic engineering, infection, diabetic foot, minimally invasive spinal procedures, and ethics and legal issues in medicine.

Dr Harwant obtained his MD from UKM in 1988; and FRCS (Edinburgh) in 1992. He trained in Orthopaedics in Malaysia , United Kingdom (MChOrth-Liverpool 1995; Dip Sports Medicine-Glasgow 1996; Spine Fellowship Edinburgh-1996; Dip Biomechanics-Strathclyde 1999); and USA (University of Iowa-1995). He obtained his PhD from UPM in 2001; and a Masters in Medical Law in 2005. He was elected FAMM in 2002
